Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic

Punta Cana

Punta Cana is what Cancun was twenty years ago: wider beaches, fewer crowds, dramatically better value on high-end all-inclusives. Flight from Chicago runs about 4.5 hours, usually with one connection, occasionally direct.

Best Time to Visit

When to Go

December through April is the dry season and our top pick. January–March is peak (and priciest). May–July is hot and humid but prices drop. August–October is hurricane season — not our recommendation unless you love a gamble.

Beyond the Hotel

What to See

You can stay on the resort. But here’s what you’d be missing.

Bávaro Beach

The main stretch — 20+ miles of white sand and turquoise water. Different resorts anchor different sections; the beach itself is public and walkable end-to-end.

Saona Island

Catamaran day trip to a genuinely gorgeous deserted-ish island, usually with a stop at a natural pool. Touristy but worth it.

Hoyo Azul

Cenote-like cobalt blue lagoon at Scape Park. Combine with zipline and other adventures if you have one full day off the beach.

Altos de Chavón

A replica 16th-century Mediterranean village in Casa de Campo (~1h drive). Movie-set pretty. Good afternoon escape.

Dolphin Island Park

If you have kids who’ve been asking about swim-with-dolphins experiences. Ethics vary — ask us which operators we recommend.

Local Knowledge

Things you should know

Currency

Dominican peso is local, but USD is accepted everywhere. Many resorts quote everything in USD. Bring small bills.

Tourist card

Required on entry. Buy online in advance for ~$10 USD or at the airport. Don’t lose it — you need it to leave.

Tap water

Do not drink. Resorts provide bottled/purified. Brush teeth with it if you have a sensitive stomach.

Tipping

All-inclusive tips: $1–2 USD per drink, $2–5 USD per meal, $2–5 USD/day housekeeping. Dominicans work hard for it.

Excursions

Outside excursions are often half the price of hotel-booked ones. We have trusted operators — ask.
